Author: Larry McMurtry
Full Title: Lonesome Dove - Miniseries
Date: Feb 1989
Lonesome Dove was nominated for 18 Emmy Awards, and won seven. It won two Golden Globes including Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV. Based upon the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Larry McMurtry and set in the late nineteenth century, this sprawling epic of the Old West is the story of the last defiant frontier, a daring cattle drive, and an undying love.
When I was about 15, I started reading Lonesome Dove. The book was huge, and I have no idea why I picked it up from the high school library. Maybe because the Stephen King books I was reading at the time were thick tomes, too. I ate dinner and jumped into the book. I stayed up for two days straight and faked being sick so I could read all day and all night.
My birthday is the anniversary of the great mini-series starring just about everybody who’s anybody. Tommy Lee Jones, Danny Glover, Diane Lane, Robert Urich, Ricky Schroder, and Angelica Huston. You can’t forget Robert Duvall, whose recent death reminded me to do a rewatch and to introduce my wife and daughter to Lonesome Dove’s greatness.
